John Whitney is considered by many to be the "Father of Computer Graphics". He started in the 1940s building clockwork mechanisms with lights to draw directly on film. Later, he bought WW2 surplus analog ballistics computers and eventually started using digital computers. I believe this one was rendered using a vector display. Incidentally, his son John Whitney, Jr. owned the company that did graphics for "The Last Starfighter".

This piece by Debussy sounds to me like a mix of a waterfall and a smooth blurry dream. Debussy is easily my favorite composer in the impressionist era. When I'm playing Debussy I try to linger and enjoy the beautiful moments, as that was the idea in this style as far as i'm aware of. The bass didn't seem to get picked up very well in this recording. It sounded much richer while i was sitting there playing this, I made a few mistakes, but overall i don't think it's HORRIBLE. After one album and a few singles that had found surprising success in Japan, the producers changed the lineup, keeping Michaela Rose and replacing the two other girls with Jasmin Vetter and Sandra Lauer. Vetter, a former gymnast, also became the trio's choreographer and Lauer, soon to be billed simply as Sandra, assumed the position of a lead vocalist. The first single of the updated Arabesque, Hello, Mr. Monkey went to number one in Japan. The Far East remained the band's biggest market, with numerous albums and compilations released over the years. However, Arabesque's success in their homeland was very modest, with only one single, Marigot Bay, entering the German charts at number eight in 1981. Achille-Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was a French composer. Along with Maurice Ravel, he is considered one of the most prominent figures working within the field of Impressionist music, though he himself intensely disliked the term when applied to his compositions. Debussy was not only among the most important of all French composers but also was a central figure in all European music at the turn of the twentieth century. Debussy's music virtually defines the transition from late-Romantic music to twentieth century modernist music. In French literary circles, the style of this period was known as Symbolism, a movement that directly inspired Debussy both as a composer and as an active cultural participant. In my recent work I have concerned myself not only with the sculpting of three dimensions but also with a fourth: the dimension of time. I have attempted to create work that evolves, adapts and regresses. Work which falls somewhere between conventional notions of pictorial art and a kind of performance. "Arabesque" is the natural continuation of this exploration -- a real time animation. With its roots in Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein" (1818) and the alchemist's laboratory, the installation presents itself as a mechanical flower: a simulacrum of nature. Life sized human body parts, impaled upon steel, move and sway and dance. The limbs, translucent and livid, bare their internal robotic mechanisms to the gaze of the viewer. The wiring itself is an aesthetic expression deliberately integrated into the installation to bring chaotic lines of abstract form to contrast with the organized symmetry of the body parts. The lifeblood of this organism is air and when activated this air flows invisibly, bestowing movement to these mechanisms and its presence is only betrayed when exhaled loudly from the valves attached to the serpentine air hose.This combined with the rattle of relays and the tandem clattering of pistons to produce a hyper-modern accompaniment to the music of Strauss. Part cinema, part theatre, "Arabesque" can be viewed form a multitude of angles, revealing a multitude of different forms, different patterns and different experiences of the piece.
